Where Lean Came From
It all begins with an idea.
Maybe you have an idea to launch a business.
Maybe you have a hobby and you want to turn it into something more than a hobby.
Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world.
If so, we will begin this blog by looking at how “Lean” or The Toyota Production System started.
And the idea grew
Henry Ford was given credit for inventing movable assembly line.
Mr. Ohno, working with Dr. Toyota in Japan, improved on the production that became known as “The Toyota Production System”.
In the early 1980’s General Motors and Toyota came together form a joint venture in America. The new joint venture was called NUMMI.
NUMMI is the plant where the word “Lean” was first coined.

After NUMMI closed its operation, Elon Musk purchased the plant and began production using some of the lean manufacturing techniques with the help of many former NUMMI employees.

“The Lean Challenge”
We follow the basic steps of Lean as we work alongside our students. The important word here is “alongside”.
Our course are conducted Online with a whole ton of support along the way. We provide FREE weekly Lean coaching sessions to help you with your Lean planning and Lean implementation.
This is a wonderful way to learn about Lean if you are just beginning your Lean journey.
One of the most important concepts you will learn is that of identifying and eliminating waste. This will help you to immediately reduce costs and to see other ways to improve.
As you eliminate waste in the process you are taking the first steps toward making your business great again.
Method of Training
When you become a student of The Lean Learning Academy you will be supported by one of our Lean Coaches.
Lean classes are taught online but coach led-training sessions are held each week.
Support is offered weekly to all students during a one hour Lean learning session. During this time learning often takes place as students share with one another their own Lean experiences.
There is no charge for this weekly one hour session.
Students can purchase additional coaching by the ½ hour or by the hour.
How Do You Sustain the Improvement?
“We tried Lean once but within weeks everything fell apart and we were right back to where we started”.
How often we have heard that complaint?
One very important concept that is often overlooked is called Standardization.
Lean teaches that we need to work in a routine so that nothing is left out of the process. But to do this, there must be standards.
This sounds very restrictive to the new employee but it is very freeing to know that when the work is done in the Lean way, a quality product will be made.
And if we want that product to be made tomorrow by a different worker, when the new worker follows the same standard way of doing the work, the product will be the same.
Day after day after day.
This comes from having high standards and maintaining these standards!
Our Teaching Method
We teach using what we call “The Lean Challenge Method”.
Our courses are subscription courses which means that students are offered a new Lean course each month. Subcrtiptions aere for three months and students work through the courses at their own pace.
The nice part of the subscription plan is that students are not rushed. They can take the time that is needed to learn what they want to learn.
